SPARKS, Nev. (KOLO) - It's obvious for most people to wear sunscreen in the summer to protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays. But local doctors say it's just as important during the winter months.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70, no matter what time of year.
"Even though you're out there hitting the slopes or just taking a walk in the sun on a nice winter day, you have to know that it's just as bad sitting on the beach in the summer," Dr. Amanda Magrini with Northern Nevada Medical Group said.
Just because the sun feels less powerful does not mean the harmful rays are not coming in contact with your skin. The U.S. EPA states snow and ice can reflect up to 90% of UV rays even on the gloomiest day, so guarding your skin year round is crucial.
"Wearing 30 SPF or higher is good, long sleeves, any time you can cover your skin with dark colored clothing," Dr. Magrini said, "Reapplying sunscreen every three to four hours when you're outside."
It's also suggested to use a lotion or moisturizer that already has sunscreen in it and make that a part of your daily routine.
"You'll want to avoid self-tanning booths at all costs because those dramatically increase your risk or skin cancer and in particular Melanoma, which is the most dangerous skin cancer," Dr. Magrini said.
Make sure to check your skin regularly for spots that are changing in color or shape, both of which are warning signs for Melanoma.
"Being out and being in the sun basking in some of that warmth is okay, as long as you're keeping your skin protected, well hydrated and well sun-screened up," Dr. Magrini said.
Taking these steps will help keep you and your loved ones' skin safer and healthier for life.
If you are unsure about any moles on your body, call your medical provider and make an appointment as soon as possible. For more information about Northern Nevada Medical center, click here.
