Watch Allure Editor Michelle Lee's $709 Nighttime Skin-Care Routine in Real Time — Video - Allure

I wasn't always a beauty connoisseur. In fact, it wasn't really until moving to New York City post-grad that I dipped my foot into the world of beauty. My beauty look consisted of occasional eyeliner and brown lipstick (it was the '90s — don't judge). Skin care, for me, was something that I did following after my mom. I used Olay Complete Lotion All Day Moisturizer because that's what she used. It wasn't until my 30s when I really started to learn more about my skin.

I discovered that having an oily T-zone does not translate to oily skin, completely changing my skincare routine to more hydrating and soothing products for my dryness. Sunscreen had not been a staple in my routine, a big regret of mine considering it probably could have prevented the dark spots I have now. Instead of just an Olay moisturizer or Noxzema, I now have an extensive routine including all the serums, face masks, and mists you could need.

You're probably wondering, OK, so then what's your skin routine now? Well, it depends. My daytime and nighttime routines are fairly different. Nighttime is when I have that extra time to indulge after I've finally stepped away from my email inbox and put the kids to bed.

It starts off with a double cleansing using Tatcha Pure One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil and a creamy or foaming cleanser like Environ Mild Cleansing Lotion, and it ends with some lip balm. A favorite of mine is Mario Badescu's because it gives me the hydration I need and also works well underneath lipstick. For all the in-between steps, I made it easy for you with this video, which details everything I do and why I do it (which is just as important).

Grab some popcorn, take a seat, and check it out. But before you go, here's the one tip I hope you take away most: Instead of throwing out that face moisturizer that you dislike or is losing its shelf-like quickly, use it on your neck, decolletage, and hands. You're able to save product and money and give those oftentimes neglected areas the care they need.
