(KNSI) - Health experts say winter weather is wreaking havoc on people's skin across Central Minnesota.

CentraCare Health Dermatologists Christina Anderson is a guest on this weekend's Your Health With CentraCare radio show and told KNSI's Bob Hughes that dry skin is the main culprit for skin issues and has some tips to keep the skin on your hands from cracking.

"Evey single time that you wash your hands or you use alcohol hand sanitizer you need to put a thick moisturizer on your skin, lotions that are thin aren't as good."

She has tips for keeping your skin healthy after a shower.

"You can bath every day or shower every day, but you should be using a moisturizing body wash that is fragrance-free and to get the best results with that you pat yourself dry."

She says the best way to keep your skin from drying out is to keep moisture in the air at home.

"The most help would be to put a humidifier in the area where you sleep. That will help keep some humidity in the air, so it's not robbing your skin of moisture that way."

She says the first signs of skin dryness will be itchy skin that will leave a powder-like residue when scratched.
