Joanna Vargas, facialist to the stars, spills skin secrets in new book - New York Post

It’s fitting that Joanna Vargas’ first book — “Glow From Within,” an encyclopedic skin-manual popping with pink pages — drops next week, just on the heels of the Oscars. Awards season, after all, is when Vargas is most in-demand, bouncing from coast to coast and tending to the complexions of celebrated actresses Julianne Moore, Naomi Watts, Rachel Brosnahan and Elisabeth Moss (amongst other boldfacers).

But the mother of two makes the most of all those red-eyes between her Midtown salon in NYC and her Sunset Tower outpost in West Hollywood. “I mostly did it on airplanes,” Vargas recalls of her book-writing process. “A five-hour flight can be super-productive.”

Judging by the meaty but very readable result, Vargas isn’t kidding. The facial guru (who opened her first flagship space on Fifth Avenue in 2006) manages to translate her deep, institutional knowledge of anatomy, ingredients, product formulation and device technology into actionable tips that are useful to celebs and mere mortals alike.

“The whole idea for the book is that anyone can have great skin,” Vargas notes. “You just have to do the right steps and honor yourself with the right program.”

She offers fascinating DIY tips for at-home lymphatic drainage facial massage and emergency skin fixes, like her fancy-but-easy Cocoa and Champagne Mask for breakouts. Other lifestyle advice abounds, such as trading up to high thread-count sheets, because budget bedding tugs on our skin while we’re tossing and turning, triggering wrinkles.

Vargas peppers her prose with juicy A-list anecdotes, like the time she brought an (unnamed) Oscar-nominated actress back from the beauty brink the morning of the Academy Awards. It seems the trophy-contender had been up the entire night before hurling from food poisoning, and was understandably pale, puffy and decidedly un-glowy. But after one of Vargas’ buzzed-about microcurrent facials, the lucky lady was instantly transformed into “the glamorous movie star she is.”

The ultimate beauty insider, Vargas says her underlying mission is to give readers the keys to the great-skin kingdom.

“A lot of people look in the mirror and criticize themselves,” she notes. “The book addresses that feeling and gives you something to take action on that’s straightforward and simple.”
